Obviously Sustainable, in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs of Indonesia (KOMDIGI), convened The Convergence Series, a multi-stakeholder panel discussion bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, startups, development organisations, and ecosystem enablers to explore how digitalisation and sustainability are jointly reshaping the future of work and the talent needed to thrive in it.

The world is undergoing two major transformations at once: the rapid acceleration of digitalisation and the transition toward more sustainable development. This convergence is increasingly consequential. Southeast Asia's digital economy surpassed US$300 billion in Gross Merchandise Value in 2025, while Indonesia's digital payment transactions are projected to reach IDR 2,908.59 trillion. Such growth signals immense opportunity, but also surfaces critical challenges, from unequal digital access and workforce readiness to digital and financial literacy, environmental sustainability, and cybersecurity, all of which must be addressed for the benefits to be inclusive and lasting.

Designing the Twin Transition With People at the Centre

In his welcoming remarks, Rezha Bayu Oktavian Arief, CEO of Obviously Sustainable, framed digitalisation and sustainability not as separate agendas but as a single "Twin Transition" that must be designed with people at its centre. He illustrated the point with the story of Ferdy, a seaweed farmer in Nabe, East Nusa Tenggara, who through a solar energy initiative gained not only clean energy but also the skills to operate and maintain the technology, showing that future-ready talent is built through practical, accessible capabilities that improve livelihoods. The remarks also marked the launch of the OS Annual Report 2025, "The Convergence: Where Green Meets Digital, Where Both Meet People," and drew on OS's collaborations with partners including AWS, the World Economic Forum, and Grab to show how convergence is already shaping sustainable digital infrastructure, workforce development, the gig economy, circular design, and community resilience.

Turning Indonesia's Demographic Bonus Into Opportunity

Opening remarks from Gita Andini, Program Development Lead for the Partnership and Investment Ecosystem at the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs, framed Indonesia's demographic bonus as both an opportunity and a challenge. With 70 percent of the population expected to be of productive age between 2030 and 2045, realising this potential depends on creating quality jobs, reducing educated unemployment, and shifting a largely consumption-driven digital economy toward higher-value innovation. She noted that startup activity, talent, mentorship, and investment remain concentrated in Java, and introduced the Garuda Spark Innovation Hub, a hub-and-spoke initiative aiming to nurture startups and digital talent nationwide with the long-term ambition of developing 1,000 technology companies.

What Future-Ready Talent Looks Like

Moderated by Anisa Indah Pratiwi of Obviously Sustainable, the panel featured Feki Pangestu Wijaya of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs, Dio Herdiawan Tobing of Obviously Sustainable, Gusti Ayu Meisa Kurnia of the ASEAN Secretariat, and Baginda Yusuf Aditya Negara of Waste4Change. Panellists agreed that the Twin Transition will create new roles demanding a blend of digital and sustainability competencies, as technologies such as AI, IoT, renewable energy, sensors, and smart grids reshape workforce needs. The discussion spanned the government's role in closing the skills gap through competency standards, scholarships, and industry partnerships; ASEAN's role through the Digital Economy Framework Agreement in supporting emerging occupations like carbon accounting and green logistics; and the use of digital technology as an enabler of transparency and accountability in areas such as waste management. Across sectors, panellists converged on a shared profile of future talent combining technical skills such as data analysis and AI literacy with human-centred competencies including sustainability literacy, adaptability, ethical technology use, and a growth mindset.

A Collaborative Agenda for Shared Benefit

Commentary from Budiono Subambang, Minister's Expert Staff of Sustainable Development at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, reinforced that the Twin Transition is best understood as a comprehensive human capital agenda requiring sound governance, ethics, and legal frameworks, and warned that without deliberate intervention digital transformation risks widening inequality. In a closing reflection, Praise Ichthus Tampi, Head of Public Policy and Sustainability at Obviously Sustainable, underscored that the Twin Transition is fundamentally collaborative, and highlighted the ongoing Sustainability Readiness Index, a joint initiative with the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs that assesses how prepared early-stage startups and MSMEs are to embed sustainability into their business practices.

A Foundation for Continued Dialogue

The session gathered participants from 29 organisations spanning government, international bodies, industry, incubators, and civil society, reflecting the breadth of collaboration the Twin Transition demands. As digital and green transitions continue to converge, The Convergence Series will keep fostering dialogue and partnership on sustainability, ESG, and Twin Transition themes.

Obviously Sustainable is proud to lead this conversation and looks forward to continuing the work with partners across sectors to ensure that as technology grows faster, it also grows more equitably, responsibly, and sustainably, so that the benefits of the Twin Transition reach every community.
