On 7 May 2026, Obviously Sustainable partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deliver the AWS Data Centre Workshop 2026, a closed-door technical forum at Park Hyatt Jakarta convening senior policymakers to translate global hyperscale data centre best practices into Indonesia's National Data Centre Roadmap.
As demand for AI and cloud computing accelerates, Indonesia stands at a strategic juncture in shaping a digital infrastructure policy that is competitive, sustainable, and secure. Amid growing global investment, including AWS's multi-billion-dollar cloud infrastructure commitment in the country, the government faces the challenge of building a regulatory framework that balances innovation, energy sustainability, security, and regional competitiveness. Against this backdrop, the AWS Data Centre Workshop 2026 was designed as a focused technical exchange to bridge the gap between global best practice and national policy needs, with all materials contextualised to Indonesia's regulatory development.
A Continuation of the AWS Future Data Centre Forum
The workshop built directly on the first AWS Future Data Centre Forum, translating earlier high-level discussions into more focused and actionable exchanges. In welcoming remarks, Rezha Bayu Oktavian Arief, CEO of Obviously Sustainable, framed the session around the development and acceleration of Indonesia's digital infrastructure, particularly data centres, and how they can support public services by integrating AI and cloud computing to accelerate the digital economy. Winu Adiarto, President Director of Amazon Data Services Indonesia, anchored the day around a single guiding question: how to run sustainable data centres over the long run.
Setting the National Agenda: Governance and the Data Centre Roadmap
In his keynote, Denny Setiawan, Director of Strategy and Digital Infrastructure Policy at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (KOMDIGI), set out both the ambition and the challenges ahead. He shared Indonesia's goal of significantly increasing national data centre capacity in response to rising AI and cloud demand, while noting open questions about whether existing standards such as ISO 27001 remain sufficient to address emerging AI-related cybersecurity risks. He also highlighted governance challenges, including institutional overlaps across ministries in managing data centres, cloud infrastructure, digital special economic zones, and subsea cable networks, and underscored the directorate's work to formulate a clear digital infrastructure roadmap.
Inside Hyperscale: Infrastructure, Resilience, and Security
AWS speakers shared practical insights into how global-scale data centres are designed and operated. The discussion covered the layered architecture of a data centre, from environmental site selection and perimeter security to infrastructure redundancy and data-layer encryption, and stressed the importance of resilience through independent power sources and real-time monitoring. Sessions also explored the distinction between AI training infrastructure and general-purpose computing, and AWS's shared responsibility model for cloud security, including data classification, layered encryption, immutable backups, and audit-based compliance frameworks such as SOC 2. A recurring recommendation was for Indonesia to prioritise data classification as the foundation for a future cloud governance policy.
Powering the Future: Energy and Sustainability
With AI adoption driving steep growth in energy demand, a substantial part of the workshop focused on long-term sustainable energy solutions. Participants examined the potential and limitations of nuclear power and small modular reactors, alongside pathways to accelerate decarbonisation through geothermal energy, agri-voltaics, and carbon-free energy investment. On efficiency, AWS shared internationally recognised metrics, noting a Power Usage Effectiveness of around 1.4 in Jakarta against an APAC average near 1.27, and Water Usage Effectiveness of roughly 2 to 2.2 litres per kWh in tropical conditions. AWS also outlined its commitment to becoming water positive by 2030 through closed-loop cooling, water recycling, and reuse, as well as its ISO 50001 energy certification for its Jakarta facility.
From Infrastructure to Impact: Communities and Skills
Beyond infrastructure, the workshop highlighted how data centre investment can generate local economic and social value. AWS presented the work of its InCommunities programme across four pillars: STEM education, local skills development, sustainability, and hyperlocal social impact spanning health, sanitation, and disaster relief. Practical examples included efforts to integrate AI modules into school curricula and digital upskilling that enables students to build their own generative-AI models, reinforcing the link between digital infrastructure and inclusive, future-ready talent.
A Foundation for Indonesia's Digital Infrastructure Future
The AWS Data Centre Workshop 2026 was attended by 25 participants from KOMDIGI's Directorate of Strategy and Infrastructure Policy, and was widely regarded as a relevant and meaningful contribution to the development of Indonesia's Data Centre Roadmap. The discussions reinforced a shared commitment between AWS and the Indonesian government to build a secure, sustainable, and globally competitive digital infrastructure ecosystem, while laying the groundwork for continued collaboration and for the next edition of the Forum.
Obviously Sustainable is proud to support this momentum and looks forward to continuing the work with AWS and Indonesia's stakeholders as the country shapes a data centre ecosystem that is innovative, sustainable, and regionally competitive.
